Hyaluronic Acid 101

Hyaluronic Acid: Benefits, Natural Sources & How to Support Hydrated, Healthy-Looking Skin

If your skin often feels dry, tight, dull or less plump than it used to, hyaluronic acid may be one of the most useful ingredients to understand.

Despite its name, hyaluronic acid is not an exfoliating acid. It is a naturally occurring substance found throughout the body, including the skin, eyes and joints. In skincare, it is best known for its ability to attract and hold water, helping the skin look smoother, softer and more hydrated.

What Is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid, often shortened to HA, is a naturally occurring molecule that helps bind water within the skin. It is an important part of the skin's extracellular matrix and contributes to hydration and a plump, supple appearance.

When skin is well hydrated, it can appear smoother, softer, more radiant and less visibly lined. Hyaluronic acid does not permanently erase wrinkles, but improving hydration can temporarily soften the appearance of fine dehydration lines and help the skin look healthier.

What Happens to Hyaluronic Acid as We Age?

As we age, the amount and distribution of hyaluronic acid within the skin change. At the same time, collagen, elastin and other structural components of the skin also change. Cumulative UV exposure can further contribute to the breakdown of the skin's supportive structures. These changes can contribute to:

  • Dryness and dehydration
  • More noticeable fine lines
  • A less plump appearance
  • Changes in firmness and elasticity
  • A duller or rougher-looking complexion

Can You Get Hyaluronic Acid From Food?

Hyaluronic acid is naturally present in the body, but it is more accurate to think of food as supporting healthy skin rather than as a direct source of large amounts of hyaluronic acid. A nutrient-rich diet can provide protein, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and healthy fats that support normal skin structure and function. Here are several foods and food groups that can be helpful as part of a skin-supportive diet:

1. Dark Leafy Greens

1. Dark Leafy Greens

Spinach, kale, cabbage and other leafy greens provide nutrients such as magnesium, antioxidants and vitamin C. Vitamin C is especially important because it supports normal collagen formation, which helps maintain the skin's structure.

2. Beans & Legumes

Beans, lentils and other legumes provide plant-based protein, minerals and amino acids. Protein supplies the building blocks your body uses for many tissues, including the skin.

3. Berries

4. Protein-Rich Foods

Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and goji berries contain antioxidants and, depending on the variety, vitamin C. Antioxidant-rich foods can be a useful part of an overall diet that supports skin health.

4. Protein-Rich Foods

5. Flaxseed & Other Omega-3 Sources

4. Protein-Rich Foods

Turkey, chicken, fish, lean meats, dairy products and legumes provide amino acids. Because collagen is a protein, getting enough dietary protein is important for normal tissue maintenance and repair.

5. Flaxseed & Other Omega-3 Sources

5. Flaxseed & Other Omega-3 Sources

5. Flaxseed & Other Omega-3 Sources

Flaxseed, chia seeds, walnuts and fatty fish such as salmon provide healthy fats, including omega-3 fatty acids. Healthy fats support overall nutrition and can be useful in a balanced diet for healthy-looking skin.

6. Prunes & Colourful Fruits

Prunes and other deeply coloured fruits contain antioxidants and beneficial plant compounds. Including a variety of colourful fruits and vegetables helps provide a broader range of nutrients.

7. Olives & Extra-Virgin Olive Oil

7. Olives & Extra-Virgin Olive Oil

Olives and extra-virgin olive oil provide monounsaturated fats and plant compounds. They can be a healthy source of dietary fat when included as part of a balanced eating pattern.

8. Dark Chocolate & Cocoa

Cocoa contains flavanols and other antioxidant compounds. Choose higher-cocoa dark chocolate and enjoy it in moderation. While cocoa can be part of a nutrient-rich diet, it does not replace daily sunscreen or other protective skincare habits.

9. Red, Orange & Yellow Vegetables

Sweet potatoes, carrots, pumpkin and red peppers provide carotenoids and other nutrients. Red peppers are also an excellent source of vitamin C. These foods can support overall nutrition, but they should never be considered a substitute for broad-spectrum sunscreen.

Don't Forget About Water

Drinking enough fluids is important for overall health and normal body function. If you are dehydrated, your skin may also look and feel drier. However, drinking extra water beyond your body's needs will not erase wrinkles or replace a good topical skincare routine.

What About Hyaluronic Acid Skincare?

Topical hyaluronic acid is widely used in serums, moisturizers and professional skincare because it acts as a humectant, helping attract water to the skin. It can be especially helpful for skin that feels:

  • Dry or dehydrated
  • Tight
  • Dull
  • Rough
  • Less plump

For best results, hyaluronic acid is often paired with a moisturizer to help support the skin barrier and reduce moisture loss. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is also essential for protecting the skin from UV-related damage.
